Diary Ka Ek Panna (A Page from a Diary) is a historical memoir by freedom fighter Sitaram Seksaria. It records the events of 26th January 1931 in Calcutta (Kolkata). This date was significant because the first ‘Independence Day’ was celebrated on 26th Jan 1930, and this was its first anniversary. The British police were determined to stop the celebrations, while the revolutionaries were equally determined to hoist the flag. The chapter provides a vivid, eyewitness account of the police brutality against peaceful protesters, including women and students. It highlights the role of women in the freedom struggle, mentioning figures like Subhash Chandra Bose leading the procession. The text describes how people were beaten, arrested, and blood was shed, yet the spirit of ‘Purna Swaraj’ (Complete Independence) remained unbroken. The monument (Monument Maidan) became a battlefield of resistance. This chapter serves as a historical document, allowing students to relive the passion and struggle of the independence movement. It emphasizes collective action and the sacrifices made by ordinary citizens. The diary format adds a sense of immediacy and authenticity to the narrative, making history personal and palpable for the reader.
