Patjhar Mein Tooti Pattiyan (Fallen Leaves in Autumn) by Ravindra Kelekar consists of two short essays: ‘Ginni Ka Sona’ (Guinea Gold) and ‘Jhen Ki Den’ (The Gift of Zen). The first essay draws a distinction between ‘idealists’ and ‘practical idealists’. It compares pure gold (ideals) with copper (practicality). While adding copper makes gold stronger (more tradable), it reduces its purity. The author argues that society needs people who value pure ideals (shuddh sona) over mere practical success. The second essay, ‘Jhen Ki Den’, is set in Japan and discusses the immense stress of modern life where people are constantly running a mental race. The author describes a ‘Tea Ceremony’ (Cha-no-yu) experience, where strict silence and a slow pace force the mind to slow down. In that stillness, the author realizes that the past is a memory and the future is a worry; only the ‘present moment’ is true and infinite. This chapter introduces students to philosophical concepts of mindfulness and ethical living. It addresses the mental health crisis of the fast-paced world and offers the Zen way of living in the ‘now’ as a solution. It is a reflective piece that encourages mental peace and integrity.
