Aatmatran (Self-Protection/Prayer) is a translation of a Bengali poem by the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore (translated by Hazari Prasad Dwivedi). Unlike traditional prayers where the devotee asks God to remove all sorrows and pain, this poem offers a unique spiritual perspective. The poet prays not for the removal of difficulties, but for the strength to face them fearlessly.Tagore asks the Almighty not to save him from danger, but to give him the courage to overcome it. He does not ask for his burden to be lightened, but for the stamina to carry it. The essence of the poem is self-reliance and dignity in devotion. The poet wishes to retain his faith in God even in the darkest of times when the whole world betrays him, but he refuses to be a helpless pleader. This chapter challenges the conventional understanding of prayer and relationship with the divine. It teaches students the value of inner strength, resilience, and taking responsibility for one’s own life struggles. It is a profound philosophical piece that encourages a mature and robust spiritual outlook.
