Chapter 10 : Tantara Vamiro Katha (Leeladhar Mandloi)
Tantara Vamiro Katha is a beautiful folk tale from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, retold by Leeladhar Mandloi. It is a tragic love story that explains the geographical separation of the Little Andaman and Car Nicobar islands. Tantara was a strong and helpful young man, and Vamiro was a beautiful village girl. They fell in love, but their society forbade marriage between people of different villages.Their silent love and subsequent helplessness highlight the rigidity of obsolete social customs. In a fit of rage and helplessness during a village festival, Tantara thrusts his divine wooden sword into the earth and splits the island in two, ending his own life. Vamiro, too, is lost in grief. However, their sacrifice leads to a change in the social order—people started accepting marriages across villages. The story is a powerful commentary on how true love can challenge and change rigid traditions. It introduces students to the tribal culture and folklore of a remote part of India. The narrative is rich in emotional depth and dramatic tension, teaching the lesson that meaningless customs should be discarded for the sake of human happiness and unity.
