Chapter Notes
The first chapter introduces students to the Bhakti movement through the verses of the great poet Surdas. These four 'Pads' (verses) are taken from his magnum opus, Bhramargeet. The context is set after Lord Krishna leaves Vrindavan for Mathura and sends his friend Uddhav to console the Gopis (milkmaids) with messages of Yoga and spiritual knowledge (Nirguna Brahman). However, the Gopis, deeply in love with the personal form of Krishna, reject Uddhav's dry philosophy with wit and sarcasm. This chapter beautifully illustrates the superiority of the path of love (Prem Marga) over the path of knowledge (Gyan Marga) and highlights the psychological depth of the Gopis' devotion.
