Empowering the Consumer
The final chapter, Consumer Rights, focuses on the market from the consumer’s perspective. It highlights the unequal power dynamic between aggressive market sellers and unorganized consumers. The chapter traces the history of the consumer movement in India and globally, leading to the enactment of the Consumer Protection Act (COPRA) 1986.
Students learn about the fundamental consumer rights: Right to Safety, Right to be Informed, Right to Choose, Right to be Heard, Right to Seek Redressal, and Right to Consumer Education. Practical aspects such as looking for quality marks (ISI, Agmark, Hallmark) and the process of filing a complaint in Consumer Forums (District, State, and National commissions) are explained. This chapter aims to create aware and responsible citizens who can assert their rights in the marketplace.
