Mata Ka Anchal (The Mother’s Lap) is a heartwarming excerpt from Shivpujan Sahay’s novel ‘Dehati Duniya’, considered to be the first regional novel in Hindi. Set in rural India during the 1930s, the story beautifully captures the innocence, mischief, and freedom of childhood. The narrator, a young boy named Taranath (affectionately called Bholanath), describes his daily life which revolves around his doting father. From waking up early, applying ashes (bhabhoot) on his forehead, to playing elaborate games with his friends, the story paints a vivid picture of a time when toys were made of clay and sweets were made of dust. The narrative details the deep bond Bholanath shares with his father, who feeds him, plays with him, and treats him like a prince. However, the turning point of the story reveals the irreplaceable nature of a mother’s protection. When Bholanath and his friends are chased by a snake in the fields, he runs home in sheer terror. Ignoring his father who reaches out to him, he runs straight into the kitchen and hides under his mother’s ‘Anchal’ (sari end/lap). The story concludes with the powerful realization that while a father provides luxury and affection, it is the mother who provides the ultimate sanctuary and security during times of crisis. This chapter is a masterpiece of child psychology and rural culture.
